Over the past weeks, the Best Design Books blog has displayed a comprehensive range of design moodboards all focused on a particular theme. Today, we return to color trends with neutral colors. These sublime shades are often regarded as the great colors that do not oversaturate a space and actually complement really well other colors. There are endless possibilities to create a marvelous interior design using neutral tones, so now, take a look at a series of contemporary interiors that feature neutral tones as the main star!
In the context of interior design, neutral means without color. Neutrals such as beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray and shades of white appear to be without color, but in many applications these hues often have undertones. Be aware of these underlying tones as you match colors or choose paint. For example, beige might have an undertone of pink, tan or gold. White might be slightly ivory, yellow, bluish or peachy. Neutrals can be used in decor in two basic ways — either as a soft, neutral only, quiet look or as background colors for dramatic accents.
If you prefer an all-neutral division, the best way to have a cohesive look is by adding layers using different hues of the same color. This will allow you to still have a sophisticated look. For instance, choose a lighter shade for your walls and go a bit darker in your upholstery.
In regards to an area rug color, make sure to select one that complements your flooring material but its also a bit darker than your walls so your furnishings can make quite the statement. With neutral tones, things such as hardwood flooring, beams, fireplaces surrounded by wood, brick or stone and window frames are the perfect team to create an understated space. Lastly, accessories will be the perfect elements to introduce pops of color in your room
As a whole, neutral tones create a warm presence, especially when mixed with grassy greens, gold accents, wooden furniture and sober colors as well. They are elegant and fashionable tones that will help you create irresistible design pieces and spaces that definitely will trigger one’s attention. Introducing neutral tones into your interiors can also provide a more peaceful, timeless, classic, and above all, zen character to your interiors!
