In Vogue: The illustrated History of the World’s Most Famous Fashion Magazine

In Vogue is a fascinating look at the history of the world’s most influential magazine. The complete compendium is illustrated with hundreds of covers and archival interiors of past Vogue editions, featuring the work of some of the twentieth century’s most respected artists, cover illustrators, and photographers—from Edward Steichen, Toni Frissell, and Erwin Blumenfeld to Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Bruce Webber, and Herb Ritts. In 1909, an entrepreneurial New Yorker named Condé Nast took charge of a struggling society journal and transformed it into the most glamorous fashion magazine of the twentieth century. In Vogue traces the history, development and influence of this media colossus—from its beginning as a social gazette in the late nineteenth century, to the exploration of modern fashion photography and new visuals in the mid-twentieth century, to its status as the top style magazine today. The book explains the makings of the magazine—from runways, to editorial meetings, to the pages of Vogue. The thoroughly researched story incorporates first-person accounts, interviews with editors and photographers, and excerpts from stories written in the magazine by many world-renowned writers, including Truman Capote, Aldous Huxley, Richard Burton, Federico Fellini, and…

Annie Leibovitz A Photographer’s Life book

“I don’t have two lives,” Annie Leibovitz writes in the Introduction to this collection of her work from 1990 to 2005. “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.” Portraits of well-known figures–Johnny Cash, Nicole Kidman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Keith Richards, Michael Jordan, Joan Didion, R2-D2, Patti Smith, Nelson Mandela, Jack Nicholson, and William Burroughs–appear alongside pictures of Leibovitz’s family and friends, reportage from the siege of Sarajevo in the early Nineties, and landscapes. The pictures form a narrative of a life rich in contrasts and continuities. The photographer has a long relationship that ends with illness and death. She chronicles the celebrations and heartbreaks of her large and robust family. She has children of her own. All the while, she is working, and the public work resonates with the themes of the life.

Bauhaus: 1919-1933

The new building of the future will be everything in one form; architecture, sculpture and painting. Bauhaus Manifesto A woodcut of a cathedral, by Lyonel Feininger, illustrated the four page Bauhaus Manifesto. Beams of light converging upon the cathedral’s three spires representing the three arts; architecture, sculpture and painting. Over seventy years after its foundation in Weimar, the Bauhaus has become a concept all over the world. The respect which it commands is associated above all with the design it pioneered, one which we now describe as “Bauhaus style”. The teachers at the Bauhaus included the leading artists of the times, among them Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, and Oscar Schlemmer. The teaching strategies developed were adopted internationally into the curriculum of art and design institutes.   The development of the Bauhaus unfolded more or less in tandem with the history of the First German Republic. Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in 1919 in Weimar, under the National Assembly, and in 1925 moved the school to Dessau where he he was able to practice his aim to develop everything from the simplest domestic utensil to the finished building. The new Dessau-Bauhaus school, designed by Gropius, and the Master’s houses…

Nardi by Nicholas Foulkes

Synonymous with Italian elegance and luxury, this Venetian jewellery maker has been creating timeless and unique pieces for over a century. With breath taking images and an informative text by Nicholas Foulkes, this oversize slipcase volume captures the history, essence, and vibrancy of Nardi. In a world of standardized big-name luxury, Nardi is an anomaly. A single-location, family-run shop that’s reserved, sepulchral, and occupying just five arches in a corner of a square, it is a globally renowned synonym for a geographically specific type of glamour. Today, as the shops of international luxury brands descend on the narrow streets of Venice’s San Marco district with their handbags and headscarves, Nardi remains an undiluted expression of an aesthetic that is uniquely and proudly Venetian. About the Author Nicholas Foulkes is a British historian, author, and journalist who have written books on subjects as diverse as James Bond, porcelain, and the trench coat. He is best known for his critically acclaimed trilogy of 19th-century histories: Scandalous Society, a biography of Count d’Orsay; Dancing Into Battle; and Gentlemen and Blackguards. His other books include High Society and Bals. Foulkes is luxury editor of British GQ, cofounder and editor in chief of Finch’s Quarterly…
