The winner of the first annual Designers & Books Design Book of the Year Award (2013) is Phyllis Lambert with Building Seagram. Phyllis is Founding Director Emeritus of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. The book, published by Yale University Press , portrays a comprehensive personal and scholarly history of New York’s Seagram Building, one of the most iconic buildings of the 20th century, designed by Mies van der Rohe. Seagram was designed by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson and is a masterpiece of the International Style and corporate modernism. Constructed in 1958 on New York Park Avenue, Seagram established the dominant style for American skyscrapers built during the following decades. Lambert established her role as a leading architectural patron and singlehandedly changed the face of American urban architecture. Over seventy years after its foundation in Weimar, the Bauhaus has become a concept all over the world. The respect which it commands is associated above all with the design it pioneered, one which we now describe as “Bauhaus style”. The teachers at the Bauhaus included the leading artists of the times, among them Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, and Oscar Schlemmer. The teaching strategies developed were adopted internationally into the curriculum of art and design institutes. The development of the Bauhaus unfolded more or less in tandem with the history of the First German Republic. Between founding the beloved Arteluce in 1939 and selling it to Flos in 1973, Sarfatti designed and produced more than 600 lighting fixtures continuously exploring innovative new ways of manufacturing and shaping the bulbs, cords and stands that light our interior worlds, even making pioneering use of halogen bulbs in fixtures as early as 1971.
