History of Graphic Design 1890–1959

History of Graphic Design 1890–1959 – In this mighty first volume, Jens Müller traces 70 years of graphic design, designers, and developments from the late 19th century through the economic boom after World War II, spanning designs that would form the basis for further revolutions. Year-by-year spreads are combined with in-depth features on hundreds of landmark projects, profiles of industry leaders, as well as visual timelines of each decade. History is a complex business. Fortunes boom and bust, empires wax and wane, and change—whether social, political, or technological—has its winners, its losers, its advocates, and its enemies. Through all the turbulent passage of time, graphic design—with its vivid, neat synthesis of image and idea—has distilled the spirit of each age. This book offers a comprehensive history of graphic design from the end of the 19th century to the remains of World War II. It traces the evolution of this creative field from its beginning as poster design to its further development into advertising, corporate identity, packaging, and editorial design. Organized chronologically, the volume features over 2,500 seminal designs from all over the world, 71 of which are profiled in detail besides 61 leaders in the field, including Alphonse Mucha (chocolate advertisements),…

The Grand Tour: Rediscover the Golden Age of Adventure

The Grand Tour: Rediscover the Golden Age of Adventure – Global travel can be a wearying business: mass tourism, overcrowded planes, chaotic airports, heightened security, cookie-cutter hotel chains, well-worn tourist trails. Finding even a sliver of adventure can sometimes feel impossible. But take heart: for all of us with an unfulfilled spirit of wanderlust, The Golden Age of Travel evokes an era when traveling the world was a thrilling new possibility for those with the resources, time, imagination, and daring. This richly illustrated volume charts the travel heyday of 1869 to 1939. Bedecked with ephemera and precious turn-of-the-century photochromes, it follows six classic tours favored by Western adventurers in the prewar era, including such famous traveler-writers as Charles Dickens, Jules Verne, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain, and Goethe. From the Grand Tour of Europe, a traditional rite of passage for young English aristocrats, to the Far East, barely touched by Western influence, to the famous Trans-Siberian Railway, we follow each journey through its itinerant stops and various modes of transport: trains, boats, cars, planes, horses, donkeys, and camels. With pages brimming with archival travel posters, guides, tickets, leaflets, brochures, menus, and luggage stickers, the book evokes all the romance, elegance,…

The colors and concepts of Beatriz Milhazes

The colors and concepts of Beatriz Milhazes – In her vibrant works, Brazilian painter Beatriz Milhazes fuses two very different ways of looking at the world. Her abstract compositions, which can be seen in a line with modernist masters from Henri Matisse to Bridget Riley, are drenched with the colors and light of her native country. Her paintings abound with signs of Brazil’s cultural roots and everyday life: carnival, folk art, and motifs from baroque to pop, all choreographed into an exuberant visual rhythm. Her chromatic constructions have an irresistible exotic allure, but, like in the work of Paul Gauguin, we find a broken paradise, where both the promises of life in the tropics and of modernist abstraction strike a darker, more doubtful note.   To achieve this balance, Milhazes developed a special technique at the end of the 1980s, painting her motifs on sheets of plastic and gluing them onto the canvas when dried. This method allows the artist to layer surfaces and create an oscillating effect between glorious sheen and melancholy shimmer. Since her breakthrough in the early 1990s, Milhazes has branched out into other media, creating silk screens, collages of chocolate and candy wrappers and all kinds…

Ken Done: Paintings You Probably Haven’t Seen

Ken Done: Paintings You Probably Haven’t Seen – ‘These paintings were all done since the year 2000. They are sometimes works done on location or sometimes in the studio. And some are just what was in my imagination. This is a picture book of paintings.’ – Ken Done. A brilliant and surprising new book from one of Australia’s best known artists. This major new volume of twenty-first century paintings by Ken Done brings together a selection of recent and mostly-unseen works from an artist at the peak of his lifelong practice. In her introductory essay, Dr Sarah Engledow expresses her delight in Done’s collected works, and muses upon the artist’s recent motifs, emblems and influences: ‘Try something at home. Subscribe Best Design Books Newsletter! Leave this book open at a favourite pair of pages, somewhere in the house. Go out for a while and forget about it. I did just that, leaving the pictures of the little church on Hydra on the bony stony bench of my putty-coloured kitchen. When I came back in I found the space had quickened: it pulsed around the hot smoked puce, cobalt and saffron. I was physically shocked. It was a coup de foudre….

Winter Trends: Get to Know the Delightful Aspen Style

Winter Trends: Get to Know the Delightful Aspen Style – What began as a small mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom of the late nineteenth century has since become the preferred getaway of the world’s elite. Treasured for what’s above ground rather than below, Aspen, Colorado has a storied history almost as dense as the directory of A-listers who have adopted the jewel of Pitkin County as their second home, or who have settled in its slopes indefinitely. From the “fortified compound” that was Hunter S. Thompson’s Owl Farm, to John Denver’s “Starwood in Aspen,” to the scores of financial titans who also call the mountain home, Aspen has long drawn an eclectic and wide-ranging crowd. With an introduction from longtime resident Aerin Lauder, founder & creative director of AERIN, Aspen Style celebrates and pays homage to the stark glamour, the working-class history, and the romance of the virtually untouched landscape that gives the town the unique charisma that continues to draw new devotees with each season. Exploring the rustic-chic atmosphere of the Hotel Jerome, the architectural excellence of Herbert Bayer’s restored Wheeler Opera House, and local culture found at Schlomo’s Deli & Grill, to name a few, this deluxe…

Discover the Amazing Art Edition of Ellen von Unwerth New Book

Discover the Amazing Art Edition of Ellen von Unwerth New Book – Ellen von Unwerth’s puckish humor pervades the pages of Heimat, an enchanted tour around Bavaria. The renowned fashion and music photographer revisits her childhood homeland to shoot a posse of gorgeous girls out for fun and adventure amid the region’s undulating fields; age-old traditions; and deep, mysterious forests. As they happily discard their dirndls and run riot across the countryside, von Unwerth’s heroines demonstrate the attributes and attractions of the region, whether munching on pretzels, striding out across pristine pastures, or seducing lederhosen-clad farmhands (and each other). Blending old-world charm with a rebellious edge and a sly subversion of traditional gender roles, Heimat bursts with fresh, provocative eroticism, tied up with wit, laced with an abiding love for a proud and beautiful region. Ellen von Unwerth worked as a top fashion model for 10 years, before taking up the camera and becoming one of the world’s most in-demand fashion photographers. Her work has featured in countless magazines, including Vogue, Interview, Vanity Fair, and i-D, while her advertising campaigns include Victoria’s Secret, Banana Republic, and Chanel. Von Unwerth’s TASCHEN books include Heimat, Fräulein, and The Story of Olga. Mark Schulz…
