Made to Measure by Meyer Davis Architecture and Interiors

Meyer Davis’ first book, Made to Measure: Meyer Davis Architecture and Interiors – Made to Measure goes on sale in October. The book will be published by The Vendome Press in North America and distributed by Thames & Hudson internationally. See also: Book Review: The Architect’s Home 1 Hotel South Beach in Miami, the restaurants of celebrated chefs, and private residences, among them the homes of Will Meyer and Gray Davis. Organized into two sections, one devoted to private homes and the other focused on public projects, Made to Measure introduces readers to a range of defining projects that delight the eye. This volume tells the story of Meyer Davis’s ascent into the upper echelon of American design and shares their philosophy and process. Since forming their practice in 1999, Will Meyer and Gray Davis have designed some 200 private and public spaces that epitomize hip luxury style. Their interiors are as dazzling and dramatic as they are comfortable and welcoming—a carefully calibrated balancing act that has become their trademark and won them a loyal clientele. As furniture designer David Netto says in his foreword, “Their style—while original—seems inevitable, and after you see a project by Meyer Davis you say to yourself,…

Book Review: The Architect’s Home

Book Review: The Architect’s Home – The greatest challenge in designing homes is negotiating the delicate balance between aesthetics and the personal desires of the occupants. While it’s important for the structure to reflect the vision and style of the architect, the client must ultimately feel at home beneath the roof. It is particularly interesting, therefore, to examine the homes that architects create for themselves. If houses reflect their owners’ personalities, then architects’ own homes are like autobiographies. Location, layout, style, lighting, artwork, furnishings—every detail adds color to the story. Each of these dwellings, presented A-Z by architect, speaks more about its designer than any other building possibly could. See also: Interior Design Books: Kaleidoscope, Living in Color and Patterns The editor and author Gennaro Postiglione studied architecture and completed post-doctoral studies in industrial design in Naples. He has been a visiting lecturer and professor in other countries and since 1998 has been teaching design in the department of Interior Design at Milan Politecnico. His research work focuses on interior design and on the relationship between architecture, culture and current events. Gennaro Postiglione is editor of Area magazine. Book Review: 1000 Chairs

Written by Ana Cardoso More than any other piece of furniture, the chair has been subjected to the wildest dreams of the designers. The particular curve of a backrest, or the twist of a leg, the angle of a seat or the color of the entire artifact all reflect the stylistic consciousness of each era. From Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto to Verner Panton to Eva Zeisel, from Art Nouveau to International Style, from Pop Art to Postmodernism, the phenomenon of the chair is so complex that it requires a reference work as comprehensive as this to do it full justice. They are all here: Thonet’s bentwood chairs and Hoffmann’s sitting-machines, Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair and Ron Arad’s avant-garde armchairs. The book devotes one page to each chair, displayed on its own as pure form, with biographical and historical information about the chairs and their designers. A special treat for anyone who loves design and a must for collectors! The editor Charlotte & Peter Fiell have written numerous TASCHEN books, including 1000 Chairs, Design of the 20th Century, Industrial Design A–Z, Scandinavian Design, Designing the 21st Century, Graphic Design for the 21st Century, 1000 Lights and Contemporary Graphic Design. They…

Interior Design Books: The Story of Eames Furniture

In this unique publication, Marilyn Neuhart and John Neuhart tell the story, to paraphrase Charles Eames himself, of how Eames furniture got to be the way it is. The Story of Eames Furniture is a biography —not of an individual person, but of arguably the most influential and important furniture brand of our time. Brimming with more than 2,500 images and insider information, this two-volume book in a slipcase sheds new light on the context in which the furniture of Charles and Ray Eames was created. It documents in unparalleled detail how the design process in the Eames Office developed as well as the significant roles played by specific designers and manufacturers. Volume 1 presents the early years of the Eames Office and its method of furniture design and development. It introduces not only Charles and Ray Eames, but also key members of their design team including Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Herbert Matter, and others —a widely diverse group of people who did the day-by-day work on the furniture projects and who together ultimately turned contemporary design in a new direction. This volume also focuses on Charles Eames’s early work with plywood and how he adapted plywood-molding techniques into a system to mass-produce…

Best Design Books: Frank Lloyd Wright: The Rooms

Margo Stipe is curator and registrar of collections at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Taliesin West, and the author of Frank Lloyd Wright: The Interactive Portfolio. Alan Weintraub is a widely published architectural photographer whose books include Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses and Frank Lloyd Wright American Master. David A. Hanks is the author of the seminal 1979 volume The Decorative Designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. An invitation into the evocative, human-scaled, and artful interiors designed by Wright. This book published by Rizzoli presents the warm interior spaces and exceptional design work of this beloved American master. Wright was an early proponent of “total design.” Unsatisfied with what was available in designing a given space or home, he invented what was needed, developing a language of architectural detail and styling that is unique and which extended to the tables, bookcases, easy chairs, sofas, and cabinets; to rugs and murals; to stonework; to stained glass “light screens,” which served as windows, doors, and room partitions; and lighting. This approach was manifested distinctly in each of his residential projects. This book offers the reader an immersion into this work by means of extraordinary artful detail in intimately explored rooms and spaces. From…
