Book Review: Decorative Arts by Jean-Michel Frank

Book Review: Decorative Arts by Jean-Michel Frank – Between 1932 and 1940, J.M. Frank completely reinvented the vocabulary of decorative arts. Working in Paris, New York and South America, Frank was inspired by neo-classicism, abstract art and primitive art. He sought to create an original style for the thirties, a style whose elegance gained him the patronage of an elite clientele. J.M. Frank’s name has come to serve as a reference for collectors. The decorative principles he created are still today the basis for the minimalist style that dominates contemporary decor. Shigeru Ban: Challenging Accepted Notions of Architecture

Shigeru Ban: Challenging Accepted Notions of Architecture – From emergency relief shelters to a cardboard cathedral and exhibition spaces in shipping containers, Pritzker Prize–winning architect Shigeru Ban has made his name with his restlessly inventive response to material and situation, as much as with his humanitarian work at the sites of natural and man-made disasters. See also: Free eBook: Must-Have Limited Edition Furniture In the spirit of a three-dimensional poetry, Ban uses materials as an incorporated part of his design, selected not for their cutting-edge credentials but rather for their expressive ability, their capacity to convey the building’s overall concept. In particular, Ban has made regular use of paper tubing in projects as varied as the Japanese Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hanover and emergency shelters for Rwanda’s Byumba Refugee Camp.   This essential introduction, compiled with Ban’s own collaboration, presents his most important projects to date to survey the full reach and importance of, in the words of the Pritzker Prize jury, a “committed teacher who is not only a role model for younger generations, but also an inspiration.” See also: Free eBook – Best Home Decor Ideas to Inspire You Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Architectu re series features: an…

Decorative Art 50s: Postwar Boom Decor Design Trends

Decorative Art 50s: Postwar Boom Decor Design Trends – Published annually from 1906 until 1980, Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook was dedicated to the latest currents in architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, glassware, textiles, metalware, and ceramics. Since the publications went out of print, the now hard-to-find yearbooks have become highly prized by collectors and dealers. TASCHEN’s Decorative Art 50s explores the spirit of optimism and the fervent consumerism of the decade. Technology and construction had been enervated by research during the war and these discoveries could now be applied in peacetime. The popularization of plastics, fiberglass, and latex literally shaped the decade. Rising incomes and postwar rebuilding on bother sides of the Atlantic led to a massive housing boom in both the suburbs and inner cities, and these new homes reflected the new style. See also: Free eBook – Best Home Decor Ideas to Inspire You While European design was extraordinarily inventive, American design was looking to an idealized vision of the future—between them a modern idiom was developed that can be seen vividly on these pages. This overview of the decade includes the work of such famous innovators as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Hans Wegner, and Gio Ponti….
