Book Review: Fred Samuel, a Master of Colored Stones – Fred Samuel was a master of colored stones who seduced his clients with the chic lifestyle of the French Riviera at its peak. Opening his first jewelry shop in Paris in 1936, the jeweler became famous by transforming original drawings by Jean Cocteau into glowing jewels, garnering celebrity and royal clients around the world. Mats Gustafson Launches Dior Illustrations in a Book

Mats Gustafson Launches Dior Illustrations in a Book – Swedish artist Mats Gustafson, based in New York, is Dior Magazine’s illustrator of the haute couture and ready-to-wear collections. Working with prestigious fashion magazines since the 1980s, Gustafson’s illustrations of fashion shows and collections are the beating heart of the magazine’s visual identity. Today, his watercolors, collages and sketches have been assembled by Rizzoli in a book simply titled ‘Dior by Mats Gustafson’, including illustrations of Christian Dior’s own designs, and enhanced with commentary by Fashion Journalist, Tim Blanks. Mats Gustafson (Swedish, b. 1951) began his career as an illustrator in the late 1970s, a time when editorial illustration was eclipsed by photography, and watercolor as a conceptual medium had barely been explored. A graduate of Dramatiska Institutet (University College of Film, Radio, Television and Theatre) in Stockholm, he first applied his graphic sensibility to the art of stage design. This experience translated into illustration when he began publishing his work in eminent international fashion publications. The elegant and subtly expressive character of Gustafson’s watercolor, pastel and cut-out paperworks expanded the possibilities of fashion illustration and nearly single-handedly reinvigorated the genre. Book Review: Ceramics, Portugueses do It Better

Book Review: Ceramics, Portugueses do It Better – Portuguese Ceramics, Tradition and Innovation is a book that shows how Portuguese ceramics drives the global market. This is a look into the tradition and innovation of Portuguese ceramics, with a focus not only on the assets, but also on the feelings and the centuries-old history of the national ceramic companies. This is a history that goes through the art and the know-how of the people who shape the raw material and make the Ceramic Industry perennial. See the Book Now! The new communication project, recently released by APICER – Portuguese Association of Ceramic and Glass Industries, is a showcase of the best that Portugal has to offer in the international market. The current challenges faced by the European Ceramic Industry, such as unfair competition, push the sector, in particular the Portuguese, to reinvent itself and opt for the necessary differentiation. See also: Book Review: Inspirations Book, Room by Room “As important as the past, is to be able to adopt it with a sense of responsibility in the future, where almost everything is different because that is the law of life. Book Review: Mythologies for the Future

Book Review: Mythologies for the Future – Swiss artist HR Giger (1940–2014) is most famous for his creation of the space monster in Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror sci-fi film Alien, which earned him an Oscar. In retrospect, this was just one of the most popular expressions of Giger’s biomechanical arsenal of creatures, which consistently merged hybrids of human and machine into images of haunting power and dark psychedelia. The visions drew on demons of the past, as well as evoking mythologies for the future. Above all, they gave expression to the collective fears and fantasies of his age: fear of the atom, of pollution and wasted resources, and of a future in which our bodies depend on machines for survival. Begun shortly before the artist’s unexpected death, this SUMO-sized Art Edition pays homage to Giger’s unique vision. It shows the complete story of Giger’s life and art, his sculptures, film works, and iconic album covers as well as the heritage left in his own artist’s museum and self-designed bar in the Swiss Alps. In an in-depth essay, Giger scholar Andreas J Hirsch plunges into the themes of Giger’s oeuvre and world, while an extensive artist biography draws on contemporary quotes…

Book Review: 1000 Pin-Up Girls by Taschen

Book Review: 1000 Pin-Up Girls by Taschen – “Girls, Gags & Giggles,” ran publisher Robert Harrison’s recipe for dishing up pin-up to the American male. Men loved his tasty dishes, a mixture of strippers and starlets dressed in outfits so fetishistic no one noticed they were never nude. While other magazines delivered the girl next door, Harrison’s publications banked on bad girls in satin and leather, fishnet stockings, and six-inch heels performing slapstick stunts straight from the burlesque stage. Harrison lured his readers in with vibrantly painted covers by top pin-up artists Earl Moran, Billy DeVorss and, most famously, Peter Driben. This Bibliotheca Universalis edition celebrates this eye-catching candy with every single cover from Beauty Parade, Wink, Titter, Eyeful, Flirt, and Whisper, from 1942 to 1955, as well as interior spreads, featuring, among others, a budding Bettie Page. In an age when far more graphic material is the norm, 1000 Pin-Up Girls celebrates an era of pin-up and pulp style to fuel your erotic imagination. Photographs of over 500 garments selected from the Museum’s permanent collection illuminate each of the featured designers, while texts by the curators explain why each designer is important in fashion history and what is special about the individual pieces featured. In her introductory essay, director and chief curator Valerie Steele writes about the rise of the fashion museum, and the emergence of the fashion exhibition as a popular and controversial phenomenon; and both Steele and contributor Suzy Menkes provide a history of this museum’s role in the world of fashion scholarship and preservation.  See also: Book Review: Inspirations Book, Room by Room Fashion Designers A–Z is available as a series of six Designer Editions. Book Review: Gala Dinner, Salvador Dalí’s Surrealist Cookbook

Book Review: Gala Dinner, Salvador Dalí’s Surrealist Cookbook – “Les diners de Gala is uniquely devoted to the pleasures of taste … If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you.”—Salvador Dalí. Food and surrealism make perfect bedfellows: sex and lobsters, collage and cannibalism, the meeting of a swan and a toothbrush on a pastry case. The opulent dinner parties thrown by Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) and his wife and muse, Gala (1894–1982) were the stuff of legend. Luckily for us, Dalí published a cookbook in 1973, Les diners de Gala, which reveals some of the sensual, imaginative, and exotic elements that made up their notorious gatherings.   See also: Book Review: Inspirations Book, Room by Room This reprint features all 136 recipes over 12 chapters, specially illustrated by Dalí, and organized by meal courses, including aphrodisiacs. The illustrations and recipes are accompanied by Dalí’s extravagant musings on subjects such as dinner conversation: “The jaw is our best tool to grasp philosophical knowledge.” All these rich recipes can be cooked at home, although…
